Health Disparities Institute for Research and Education (HDIRE) Symposium

May 01, 2012

The Health Disparities Institute at Tuskegee University is a newly established initiative focusing on major health disparities in minority communities. The Health Disparities Institute for Research and Education (HDIRE) hosted their inaugural symposium April 12-13, 2012. Dr. Irving McConnell presented “Funding Opportunities” at the symposium, encouraging individuals to pursue more diverse funding opportunities and collaborations with other industries and institutions. His presentation, as well as the symposium itself, was extremely well received. The HDIRE plans to host the symposium again next year during “National Minority Health Week” in April.

The Health Disparities Institute for Research and Education focuses its efforts on the African American population in the Black Belt region of Alabama. Diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and HIV/AIDS are prominent in minorities in these regions.
