The McConnell Group Works with Acupuncture Therapy

New findings have shown that acupuncture is a form of treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, and can be used for soldiers suffering from PTSD after serving in combat. Treated veterans have reported a reduction in stress, less anxiety and improved mental clarity.

The McConnell Group has recently employed an acupuncturist at Camp Pendleton. Dr. Martin Louie is the MD/Acupuncturist for the Navy's Psychological Health Care Access Initiative (PHAI) at Camp Pendleton.

Under PHAI, an innovative acupuncture approach has been developed by combining neuroanatomy and physiology with classic acupuncture techniques. Treatments address acupuncture first aid, the basic acupuncture for acute pain and trauma. More advanced treatments focus on chronic neuromusculoskeletal pain, including headache, traumatic extremity pain and restriction, cervical and lumbar myofascial and discogenic pain, complex regional pain, and residual and phantom limb pain. The uses of acupuncture for the treatment of PTSD along with approaches to psychological and behavioral health issues are also addressed.

Dr. Louie is an Air Force Family Medicine Doctor (Active Reserve) trained in medical acupuncture from the Helms Institute (HMI). The McConnell Group and HMI have partnered to train FM residents in medical acupuncture.
